School Fete Hog Roast, Great Leighs.

The English summer is now officially here (although it already felt like it was here with the recent heatwave we enjoyed). We’ve just spent the last days of spring taking our services all over the place, including catering for a fantastic school fĂȘte near Great Leighs. The event was organised to raise much-needed funds for the school and we at The Spitting Pig were delighted to be asked to provide the hot food.

We pride ourselves in knowing how to make an event a day that you’ll always remember (and hopefully cherish). We love what we do and I think that’s clear to see in our attitudes when we’re at work – whether it’s catering for a small birthday party, a large wedding or hundreds of people at a corporate do. When it comes to a school fĂȘte, it can often be quite fun, but we arrive at all venues with smiles on our faces anyway and not just because there’s lots of games to play and cakes to eat!

On the day itself, we arrived to set up the roasting equipment very early; it was still dark when I got up. It can take seven or eight hours to roast a hog and with hordes of hungry customers to feed at lunchtime, including kids, parents and school staff, we had to get going.

Wherever we go, guests and customers always tend to comment on the wonderful smells around them first, often before spotting our machines. Today was no different and as the hog roast Great Leighs aromas filled the air, crowds began to gather around our marquee and the visual impact had lots of people licking their lips and queuing to try some freshly cooked pig.

We went prepared to the event with soft, floury rolls, apple sauce, stuffing and crispy crackling, as well as condiments and napkins. All around us and across the fields, we could see people happily devouring our hog roast Great Leighs sandwiches and talking about our great product, which is always a delight to hear.

The day wasn’t over yet though. Once we sold out and packed up, it was time to hit the tombola, the fortune teller and the face painting stall, before eventually finding the table where the cakes were being sold!
